The week-long exhibition in Pleasanton presented Liang’s ink-inspired portrait photography and contemporary interpretations of traditional Chinese aesthetics.
PLEASANTON, Calif. – August 31st, 2026 – Contemporary visual artist and educator Liang Jianwen concluded his solo photography exhibition, “The Dream in the Garden,” at Gallery Da Vinci in Pleasanton, California. Presented from August 24 to 31, 2026, the exhibition brought together a selection of Liang’s portrait works exploring cultural memory, Eastern aesthetics, and the relationship between the human figure and the natural world.
A closing reception was held on August 29, offering visitors a final opportunity to experience the exhibition and engage with Liang’s distinctive photographic language.
Conceived as a passage from the familiar into an imagined Eastern landscape, “The Dream in the Garden” presented portraiture as more than a means of representation. Across the exhibition, figures appeared suspended between presence and reverie, surrounded by cranes, mist, fans, theatrical dress, domestic objects, and painterly fields of color.
Rather than arranging the photographs as isolated narratives, the exhibition followed a visual rhythm shaped by gaze, gesture, atmosphere, and tonal transition. Deep greens opened into smoke and shadow, while ornament gradually gave way to negative space. Each image formed an individual world while maintaining a visual and emotional dialogue with the surrounding works.
Liang’s practice draws upon the compositional principles of traditional Chinese ink painting, particularly its use of emptiness, balance, and the shifting relationship between the visible and the implied. Cultural elements including tea smoke, Qiang embroidery, lion dance, paper cutting, ceramics, opera costumes, and traditional fans are reinterpreted through contemporary portrait photography.
In Liang’s work, these elements are not presented as fixed historical symbols or expressions of nostalgia. Instead, they become evolving visual metaphors through which cultural memory can be reconsidered in the present.
“For me, photography is the coexistence of professional technique and cultural expression,” Liang said. “Light and composition form the structure of an image, while culture gives it its soul. I hope to use photography as an international language through which Chinese cultural stories can be seen and understood.”
Liang’s path into photography began during his years as a schoolteacher, when he first used the camera to document everyday campus life and the experiences of his students. What began as a practice of observation gradually developed into a sustained exploration of portraiture and visual storytelling.
Over the years, Liang has established a photographic language that combines disciplined lighting and composition with the atmosphere of Chinese ink painting. His works have received APAS, APU, and GPU Gold Medals in international photography competitions and have been selected for international photography exhibitions.
“The Dream in the Garden” represented a continuation of Liang’s commitment to bringing traditional Chinese visual culture into dialogue with contemporary photography. By presenting the exhibition in California, Liang extended that dialogue to an American audience and invited viewers from different cultural backgrounds to encounter Eastern aesthetics through a shared visual experience.
The conclusion of the exhibition does not mark the end of this exploration. Liang plans to continue developing photographic projects inspired by traditional culture and intangible cultural heritage, using contemporary image-making to create new connections between cultural memory and modern experience.
The dream will continue beyond the gallery.
